CLEVELAND -- The Reds placed catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day injured list Sunday even before the club determined the extent of a left hamstring injury.
Trevino is scheduled to return to Cincinnati on Sunday afternoon and undergo an MRI on Monday. He was injured Saturday trying to run to first base after his fifth-inning sacrifice bunt.
“We’ll know more tomorrow," manager Terry Francona said.
The contract of catcher P.J. Higgins was selected from Triple-A Louisville and he will serve as the backup to regular catcher Tyler Stephenson.
This marks the second IL stint of the season for Trevino, who was out with a back injury from April 5-26. He is batting .143 with no homers in 10 games. Higgins was up with the club while Trevino was out and batted .200 in five games.
For the Reds to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Higgins, outfielder Rece Hinds was designated for assignment. Since he must clear waivers before returning to the Minors, it could mark the end of his time with the organization for Hinds -- a second-round selection in the 2019 Draft. With his ceiling, he could very well get claimed.
Hinds, 25, hit five home runs over his first six Major League games after he debuted for the Reds in 2024 but was unable to have sustained success after that. After being one of the final cuts at Spring Training this year following a great camp, he got off to a hot start with Louisville. But after a promotion and several days in the starting lineup, he batted .121 with a .379 OPS and no homers in 12 games before being sent down on May 3.
“Maybe for his sake, I really hope maybe he gets an opportunity that he didn’t get here." Francona said. "We love the kid. There’s obviously tools there. So sometimes things have a way of working out for guys.”
In a move for the bullpen, Luis Mey was optioned to Louisville and right-hander Jose Franco was recalled. Mey was unable to protect a two-run lead in the sixth inning of Saturday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland and has a 5.40 ERA in six appearances.
Franco, who is up for the third time this season, was optioned to Louisville on May 8 but, because of the injury to Trevino, did not have to wait the required 15 days to return to the big leagues. Because he threw 47 pitches for Louisville on Thursday, he isn't considered available to pitch again for the Reds until Monday at Philadelphia.
