CINCINNATI – In a final test before activation, Reds catcher Jose Trevino played a rehab assignment game at High-A Dayton on Friday.
Getting five innings of action behind the plate, Trevino went 2-for-2 with an infield single, a single to right field, a walk and two runs scored in Dayton's 6-4 win over South Bend.
Trevino, 33, went on the injured list April 8 (retroactive to April 5) because of a thoracic spine strain in his back that he first felt during Spring Training. After getting relief from an epidural injection, he slowly began to work his way back.
If Trevino still feels good during a day off on Saturday, the Reds plan to activate him on Sunday for the series finale vs. the Tigers.
Since Trevino has been on the IL, P.J. Higgins has served as the backup catcher for Cincinnati behind Tyler Stephenson.
