Reds awaiting results of COVID-19 tests

Club hopes it can return to action Tuesday in Kansas City

CINCINNATI -- With their final two games of a four-game series vs. the Pirates postponed because a Reds player tested positive for COVID-19, the Reds continued to wait Sunday for what comes next.

Reds players and staff underwent testing on both Saturday and Sunday, via a drive-through method at Great American Ball Park. The club is also continuing to carry out contact tracing.

The hope is that all the results from Sunday’s tests will be known by Monday. That’s also when the team will learn if it will be cleared to fly to Kansas City to open a two-game series on Tuesday vs. the Royals.

While awaiting results, the team must stay away from GABP and there were no workouts permitted.

The Reds learned of a player’s positive test during the bottom of the ninth inning of Friday’s 8-1 victory over the Pirates, and Major League Baseball moved to postpone their games on Saturday and Sunday.

The Pirates remained in Cincinnati through the weekend just in case it was possible to make up the postponed games in a doubleheader on Monday, which is mutual off-day for both clubs. They did hold a workout at GABP on Sunday afternoon. But once it was determined that playing on Monday was not possible, the team departed for the airport to fly back to Pittsburgh.

"Major League Baseball has decided, protocol-wise, that they did not want us to play Monday. What goes into that decision happens a lot higher than me,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton told Pittsburgh reporters via Zoom. “They just informed us that we're not going to play Monday and that we'll reschedule."

Shelton said the Pirates underwent COVID-19 testing on Saturday and Sunday. All their tests from Saturday came back negative, Shelton said. They were still awaiting Sunday’s results when Shelton met with the media.

The Reds will visit PNC Park for three games Sept. 4-6, with another mutual off-day on Sept. 7, and the Pirates will return to Cincinnati for another three-game set Sept. 14-16.
