CINCINNATI -- Reds top prospect Nick Senzel was placed on the 7-day disabled list by Triple-A Louisville as the infielder is being treated for vertigo.
The move, which was made on Tuesday, is retroactive to last Sunday. Senzel hasn't played since being removed after one plate appearance on May 3, when he felt dizzy.
"We're being very cautious with Nick," Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. "He's had this before. I feel like we've got a good treatment plan in place. We do think it's realistic to see him back on the field in fairly short order."
Senzel, ranked as the organization's No. 1 prospect by MLB Pipeline and No. 7 overall, also missed several days at the end of last season with Double-A Pensacola due to vertigo, a condition that causes loss of balance and dizzy spells.
The 22-year-old Senzel -- the second overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft -- is batting .271/.351/.459 in 22 games, with three home runs and seven RBIs. During Spring Training, he participated in his first big league camp at shortstop and third base, and he was widely expected to be in the Majors this season. The Reds had Senzel play second and third base for Louisville, as they hope versatility will help him find a spot to play once he's promoted.
But for the time being, that's on hold. Williams did not provide a specific timetable for when Senzel could resume playing.
"It's much more if he's treated and when he's symptom free, he'll be cleared for activity," Williams said. "We have reason to be optimistic about that."
