Red Sox's playoff roster remains unchanged for ALCS
With 11 pitchers, 14 position players, Farrell plans to do more mixing, matching
BOSTON -- For the American League Championship Series, the Red Sox will stick with the roster that worked so successfully against the Rays in the Division Series.
Boston officially submitted its roster Saturday morning, and manager John Farrell will once again deploy 11 pitchers and 14 position players.
The roster is as follows:
Pitchers: Craig Breslow, Clay Buchholz, Ryan Dempster, Felix Doubront, John Lackey, Jon Lester, Franklin Morales, Jake Peavy, Junichi Tazawa, Koji Uehara, Brandon Workman
Catchers: David Ross, Jarrod Saltalamacchia
Infielders: Xander Bogaerts, Stephen Drew, Will Middlebrooks, Mike Napoli, David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia
Outfielders: Quintin Berry, Mike Carp, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jonny Gomes, Daniel Nava, Shane Victorino
Farrell enjoyed the flexibility of his 25-man group in the 3-1 series victory against Tampa Bay, and indicated he might do even more mixing and matching in the ALCS against the Tigers.
Though Saltalamacchia is the primary catcher, Ross will get some playing time in this series, even though the Tigers use all righty starters.
Nava and Gomes will continue to share left field. Carp, who didn't get a start in the ALDS, probably will in this round, perhaps at first base to spell Napoli against one of Detroit's tough righties.
Middlebrooks will start Game 1 on Saturday at third base, but Farrell hinted that things could change as early as Game 2. Perhaps in the coming days, Bogaerts will make his first career postseason start.
