Ellsbury out of lineup nursing sore wrist

SEATTLE -- Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury wasn't in the Red Sox lineup on Monday night, as he received treatment for a wrist injury sustained late in Sunday's loss to the Angels.

"In his second to last at-bat [Sunday] night, he felt some irritation in the left wrist. He was able to get through last night, was pretty sore afterwards, and has reported today with similar feelings," manager John Farrell said. "Rather than risk anything further, we're giving him a day out just to receive treatment."

Ellsbury is riding a 17-game hitting streak, during which he's batting .389 (28-for-72). He's also been a terror on the basepaths, leading the Majors with 36 stolen bases in 39 attempts.

Farrell said there aren't any immediate plans to have X-rays taken on Ellsbury's wrist.

"We're hopeful that this is something that will respond to treatment. If it doesn't, certainly, every test at that point would be taken," Farrell said.

Boston's outfield depth already is stretched razor-thin. Shane Victorino is recovering from a sore hamstring, although Farrell indicated he would be able to play in an emergency. That means more playing time for Mike Carp, who started in left field on Monday with Daniel Nava in center and Jonny Gomes in right.

"That's kind of a tentative situation, we've got some things to balance and weigh out," Farrell said. "As we get through today, we'll have a better read on how long each case, both for Shane and Ellsbury, will be."
