Red Sox name Boles Triple-A Pawtucket manager

BOSTON -- Kevin Boles continued to climb the ladder of the Red Sox's farm system on Wednesday, as the club announced he will be the new manager for Triple-A Pawtucket. Boles replaces Gary DiSarcina, who recently returned to the Angels to serve as third-base coach.

This was the next natural step in the progression for Boles, who managed Double-A Portland the last three seasons. Boles came to the Red Sox in 2008 and managed Class A Salem in his first three years with the organization.

The 38-year-old Boles also managed in the Minor Leagues for the Marlins, Royals and Twins. He has a career record of 797-786. Boles comes from a baseball family. His father, John, managed the Marlins in 1996 and again from '99-01.

Pawtucket's coaching staff remains intact with one exception. Bruce Crabbe, who managed short-season Lowell last season, is the new pitching coach.

The promotion of Boles from Portland sparked a chain of other managerial hires within the organization. Former Major Leaguer Billy McMillon is the new manager at Portland, jumping up from Salem. McMillon has been in Boston's organization the last seven seasons, and this will be his fifth as manager. Former Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman will return as Portland's hitting coach for the second year.

Carlos Febles, another former Major Leaguer, will take over for McMillon as the manager at Salem. He managed at Class A Greenville the last two years. Hitting coach U.L. Washington, who played shortstop for the pennant-winning Kansas City Royals in 1980, joins Febles in the move from Greenville to Salem.

Darren Fenster, who made his managerial debut with the Gulf Coast League Red Sox last year, will manage Greenville in 2014.

Tom Kotchman, the father of former Red Sox first baseman Casey Kotchman, will take over as the manager of the Gulf Coast League Red Sox.
