ATLANTA -- Braves right-hander John Gant exited Monday's 8-3 loss to the Indians in the third inning with a left oblique strain.
The Braves announced Gant will be reassessed on Tuesday.
"He had been competing really well and keeping us in games and doing a really good job, and I hate to see that for him having a kind of setback like that. ... [He was] feeling good about himself, and I just hate it for him," Braves manager Brian Snitker said.
With a 2-2 count on Cleveland pitcher Trevor Bauer, a trainer and Snitker went to the mound to check on the 23-year-old. After throwing a warmup pitch, Gant left the game and was replaced by right-hander Tyrell Jenkins.
Gant threw two-plus innings, allowing one run on a Mike Napoli RBI single in the first, striking out two while allowing three hits.
"Obviously it's frustrating," Gant said. "I'm trying not to worry about it too much and bounce back and stay positive, think positive thoughts and take it from there."
Jenkins pitched four innings in relief. In his first extended outing, the 23-year-old took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
"It was a big, I wouldn't say confidence boost, but it was good to get out there and throw multiple innings," Jenkins said, "and at the same time ... I hate that I couldn't keep us closer, but I did what I could, and I'll be better from here on out."
