Here’s the Pirates’ Spring Breakout roster (Fri., 7:35 p.m. ET)

12:07 AM UTC

BRADENTON, Fla. -- For a Pirates organization that boasts the top overall prospect -- not to mention four others ranked within MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 -- this year’s Spring Breakout figures to be a must-see showcase.

Here’s everything you need to know about it:

What is Spring Breakout?

In 2026, MLB Spring Breakout will again be a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future -- the current stars of Minor League Baseball – in 16 exhibition games played between teams composed of each MLB organization’s top prospects. The third edition will be held from March 19-22 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training.

In 2027, Spring Breakout will be expanded into a single-elimination tournament format, with champions being crowned in both the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

When is the Pirates’ game?

The Pirates will host the Tigers in a Spring Breakout showdown at 7:35 p.m. ET on Friday at LECOM Park in Bradenton.

Notable position players:

Konnor Griffin, SS (No. 1 overall prospect)

Griffin is perhaps the most must-see prospect in baseball right now. The 19-year-old phenom came into camp as MLB Pipeline’s top overall prospect, and he’s had no problem living up to the hype so far. On just the second day of Grapefruit League play, he was already catching the eye of two-time MVP -- and former top prospect himself -- Bryce Harper. Two days later, Griffin was smashing not one but two home runs over the replica Green Monster in a rout of the Red Sox.

An all-around talent, Griffin is already pushing for a spot on the Pirates’ Opening Day roster -- and the Spring Breakout might just turn into his latest audition.

Termarr Johnson, 2B (Pirates’ No. 7 prospect)

Johnson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, had a great spring in Major League camp, hitting .368 with a 1.026 OPS and five RBIs across 12 spring games before he was reassigned to Minors camp on March 12. Still just 21, Johnson also went from the youngest in Pirates Spring Training one year ago to a clubhouse leader in ’25. He’s moving through the organization at the right time, too, as new arrival Brandon Lowe’s contract is up at the end of the season. With a solid showing at Triple-A, the well-prepared Johnson will be waiting in the wings for Pittsburgh to need him.

Notable pitchers:

Seth Hernandez, (PIT No. 3, MLB No. 29)

Hernandez is 19 years old and already has three elite pitches. He was billed as the top right-handed pitcher in the 2025 Draft, but his high-octane fastball isn’t even his best offering. Hernandez projects to be a frontline starter and has a devastating changeup that’s rated as “double-plus.” This is a great time to see him showcase what he’s got against some of the Tigers’ top prospect talent before he begins his pro career in a couple of weeks.

Wilber Dotel, (PIT No. 13)

Dotel is a beast who has shown some serious stamina as he rises steadily through the Minors. He was third in the Eastern League last season with 134 strikeouts (27 starts) and 125 2/3 innings pitched, both tops in the Pirates’ farm system. He did so with deliveries that registered in the high-90s deep into his outings. Dotel’s walks per nine innings also dropped to a career-low 3.1 in 2025, and he’s gotten rave reviews for his physicality and the work he’s done improving his splitter.

Roster details

Spring Breakout rosters were constructed in two phases in 2026. Clubs initially submit preliminary 40-man player pools on Thursday, March 5, which were then pared down to the official rosters on March 18.
