Acuna Jr. 'sore' but hopeful after collision

PHILADELPHIA -- One day after the Braves placed both Nick Markakis and Dansby Swanson on the injured list, right fielder left Sunday's game in the seventh inning with neck stiffness, shortly after colliding with Phillies shortstop Jean Segura at second base.

Acuna was feeling better after the 9-4 loss to the Phillies, and both he and manager Brian Snitker said they hope to have him in the lineup for Monday's series opener against the Nationals.

"It’s still a little stiff and a little sore, but now that I’ve had the chance to be out of the game a little bit, it’s fine," Acuna said through an interpreter. "Hopefully tomorrow, we’ll check on it and I’ll hopefully be able to play."

After singling with two outs in the seventh, Acuna broke for second base with Ozzie Albies at the plate. He was ruled safe after a headfirst slide into the bag, but his neck and cheek collided with the left knee of Segura, who departed the game with a right shin contusion.

Acuna stayed in to run the bases, but he did not return to the field in the bottom half of the frame. Charlie Culberson took over in right field.

"It was stiffening up on him when he came back in after the inning," Snitker said. "He couldn’t really turn his head, but they’ve treated him and it’s relaxed since then."

While the Braves want to see how Acuna's neck responds, it was mostly encouraging news for a team that is already without its regular right fielder after Markakis fractured his left wrist in Friday's series opener.

"The doctors checked him out and everything looks good," Snitker said of Acuna. "We’ll see if it stiffens up tomorrow when he gets there, but it’s nothing bad."

Acuna said he's definitely suffered worse injuries in his career, saying this "wasn't anything serious."

"It definitely feels better now," Acuna said. "Obviously, during the game -- I don’t know if it was due to the adrenaline or what -- but it felt like it was getting a little tighter at the moment. Now that we’ve had a chance to just be here and relax a little bit, it definitely feels better."
