The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to terms with LHP T.J. McFarland on a 1-year contract with a club option for 2020.

McFarland, 29, set career bests in games (47), ERA (2.00), WHIP (1.19), fewest runs (18), opponent average (.239), opponent OBP (.296), opponent SLG (.336) and opponent OPS (.631) last season with the D-backs while holding opponents scoreless in 33 of 47 games. He ranked among NL relievers in ground balls (2nd, 153), groundball pct. (3rd, 68.3), groundball-to-flyball ratio (3rd, 4.50), ERA (4th, 2.00) and innings (10th, 72.0).

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder held lefties to a .165 average (16-for-97) with 2 walks and 22 strikeouts in 2018, including a .115 mark (6-for-52) with 16 strikeouts in his final 24 games. He did not allow a home run to a left-handed batter last season, making him 1 of 9 NL pitchers (including teammate Andrew Chafin) to face 100+ left-handed hitters and not allow a homer.

McFarland recorded 21 outings of longer than 1.0 inning in 2018, tied with Robert Gsellman/NYM and Tyler Glasnow/PIT for fourth most in among NL relievers, trailing Josh Hader/MIL (33), Seth Lugo/NYM (27) and Steven Brault/PIT (23). He also had 4 relief outings of 4.0+ innings, the highest total in the NL and tied with Josh Collmenter in 2013 for the most in team history by a reliever.

His 1.80 home ERA was the best all-time by a D-backs left-handed reliever and 10th best by a D-backs reliever all-time (min. 25 GR) [leader: José Valverde, 1.04 in 2003]. His 59.2 innings at the All-Star break were the most by a D-backs reliever all-time (surpassed Byung-Hyun Kim's 58.1 innings in 2001).

McFarland has played parts of 6 seasons with the Orioles (2013-16) and D-backs (2017-18), and in 211 games (3 starts), he is 18-14 with 1 save, 12 holds, a 3.94 ERA (142 ER in 324.1 IP), .286 opponent average and 196 strikeouts. In 2 seasons with the D-backs, he has appeared in 90 games (1 start) and is 6-7 with 1 save, 1 hold, a 3.43 ERA (48 ER in 126.0 IP), .266 opponent average and 71 strikeouts.
