D-backs to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day with multi-day celebration in partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley

The Arizona Diamondbacks will partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley to celebrate Jackie Robinson Day and to honor Robinson’s legacy. On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier, serving as a powerful catalyst for necessary changes in our sport and our Nation. Teen Movie Night – Friday, April 14, 2023 – 4 - 7 p.m.

30 participating club members will attend a viewing of the film “42,” with a discussion to follow around the significance of Jackie Robinson, his values and what they mean to them.

Panelists include Edwin Jackson, The Player’s Alliance; Travis Hardin, Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and former Minor League baseball player; and Arizona State Representative Marcelino Quiñonez.

The D-backs Academy, RBI team and Nike will host a free immersive clinic for the members of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley on how to play the Jackie Robinson way. The clinic will take place on the field with stations, exhibition games and a post-event lunch.

Attendees receive the following:

  • On-the-field training with D-backs Academy Coaches and special guests
  • Limited edition customized camp swag
  • Tickets to a 2023 D-backs regular-season game

Jackie Robinson Day Celebration at Chase Field – Thursday, April 20, 2023

The Arizona Diamondbacks Foundation will continue their annual contribution to support scholarship opportunities for the MLB Arizona Diamondbacks Branch of Boys & Girls Club of the Valley with a $4,200 charitable gift in honor of Jackie Robinson’s number 42.

Each year, outstanding youth across clubs are recognized as Youth of the Year. Finalists compete for the title of Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley Youth of the Year then advance to State, Regionals and Nationals. This year’s honoree for Arizona is Xitlalic Noemi Portillo from the Warner & Shirley Gabel Branch.

            National Anthem

The national anthem will be performed by the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, who will also perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

Ceremonial First Pitch

Richard Yarbough, administrator at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Yarbough played baseball for two years for the University of Southern California.
