RHP Matt Wisler joins Mariners on July 5, 2019

Right-handed Pitcher Mike Wright is designated for assignment

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today the following roster moves:

  • Matt Wisler, RHP, reports to club.
  • Mike Wright, RHP, designated for assignment.

Wisler (#44) will be in uniform and available for tonight’s (7:10 pm PT) game versus the Oakland Athletics at T-Mobile Park.

Seattle has 7 days to trade, release or outright the contract of Wright to the minors.

With today’s roster moves, the Mariners Major League, 40-man, is now at 39.

Wisler, 26, was acquired by Seattle from San Diego on July 4. He was designated for assignment by San Diego on June 29. Wisler made 21 relief appearances with the Padres this season, posting a record of 2-2 with a 5.28 ERA (17 ER, 29.0 IP) with 34 strikeouts and 10 walks. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander recorded at least 1 strikeout in 18 of his 21 outings with the Padres, including 9 appearances of 2+ strikeouts. He worked multiple innings in 9 of 21 games with San Diego.

Wisler was originally selected by San Diego in the 7th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. He made his Major League debut with Atlanta on June 19, 2015 vs. New York-NL, earning the win after tossing 8.0 innings of 1-run ball. This marks the 4th time in his career that he has been traded. In 2015, he went from the Padres to the Braves in a 6-player deal that sent Craig Kimbrel to San Diego. In 2018, he was sent from Atlanta to Cincinnati in a 4-player deal that sent Adam Duvall to the Braves. On April 1 of this year, he was acquired by San Diego from Cincinnati in a minor league deal. 

Wisler has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with the Braves (2015-18), Reds (2018) and Padres (2019), going 18-25 with a 5.15 ERA (210 ER, 367.0 IP) with 275 strikeouts and 119 walks in 106 appearances (49 starts).

Wright, 29, was selected from AAA Tacoma on June 23. He has appeared in 2 games since then, allowing 2 ER in 5.0 innings pitched. Wright was designated for assignment on May 19 and outrighted to AAA Tacoma on May 22. With the Rainiers, he was 0-1, 2.66 (6 ER, 20.1 IP) in 6 games, 4 starts. He was acquired by Seattle from Baltimore on April 24 after the Orioles designated him for assignment on April 21. With the Mariners from April 24-May 22, he did not record a decision, appearing in 7 games (11.0 IP) and allowing 11 ER (9.00 ERA). In 10 relief appearances with the Orioles this season, he was 0-1 with 1 save (2 opportunities) with a 9.45 ERA (14 ER, 13.1 IP), 14 strikeouts and 7 walks. Overall this season, he is 0-1 with 1 save and an 8.28 ERA (29.1 IP, 27 ER) in a combined 19 games with Baltimore and Seattle.

Wright has appeared in parts of 5 Major League seasons with Baltimore (2015-19) and Seattle (2019), compiling a career record of 10-12 with 1 save and a 6.03 ERA (173 ER, 258.0 IP) with 208 strikeouts and 99 walks in 110 career games (23 starts). He made his Major League debut with the Orioles on May 17, 2015 vs. the Angels. He was originally selected by Baltimore in the 3rd round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of East Carolina University.
