CARLSBAD, Calif. -- Charlie Manuel led the Phillies to their second World Series title in franchise history in 2008. No wonder he receives a loud ovation each August when he is introduced at alumni weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
Manuel's numerous successes in Philadelphia -- one World Series title, two National League pennants, five consecutive NL East titles from 2007-11 and more wins than any manager in Phillies history -- earned him a spot on the Today's Game Era ballot for the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Joe Carter, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Lou Piniella, Lee Smith and George Steinbrenner also earned spots on the ballot. A 16-member Hall of Fame-appointed electorate will vote on those 10 on Dec. 9 at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas.
Manuel managed the Phillies from 2005-13 before moving to the front office, where he currently serves as a senior advisor to general manager Matt Klentak. Manuel posted a 780-636 (.551) record as the Phils' manager. He also managed the Indians from 2000-02, accounting for his 1,000-826 (.548) overall mark as a manager.
Manuel is one of 64 managers in baseball history with 1,000 wins.
Manuel was inducted into the Phillies' Wall of Fame in 2014 and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame in '16.
The Today's Game Era is one of four eras committees -- along with Modern Baseball, Golden Days and Early Baseball -- that provide an avenue outside voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 seasons. Specifically, the Today's Game Committee includes candidates who made contributions to baseball from 1988 to present day.
The Today's Game ballot, along with Modern Baseball, are considered twice during a five-year period. The most recent electees from the Today's Game ballot were John Schuerholz, the architect of the 1990s Braves, and Bud Selig, the former MLB Commissioner and Brewers owner, in 2016.
