PHILADELPHIA -- Kyle Schwarber keeps hitting home runs and the Phillies keep winning.
Well, at least they have won in interim manager Don Mattingly’s first two games.
The Phillies scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Giants, 3-2, in Game 1 of Thursday’s split doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park. Justin Crawford's two-out infield single scored Bryson Stott from third base to win it.
It was the second walk-off hit of the rookie’s career.
They had a chance because of Schwarber’s first-inning home run, which was the 350th home run of his career. Schwarber hit a 3-2 cutter from Giants right-hander Logan Webb at 113.0 mph, sending the ball a Statcast-projected 406 feet into the second deck in right field.
It was Schwarber’s 10th homer of the season and the 197th homer of his Phillies career.
Schwarber is on pace to hit 54 homers this year, following 56 home runs in 2025. If he hits 50 this year, he would finish the season with 390 career homers, putting him on a solid pace to reach 500 career homers in a few years.
Schwarber entered Game 1 averaging a home run every 12.47 at-bats since he joined the Phillies in 2022. Only Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has homered at a higher rate (one homer every 9.68 at-bats). Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani is third, averaging a homer every 12.64 at-bats.
Schwarber also ranks seventh in MLB history in fewest career games to 350 home runs:
- Aaron Judge: 1,088
- Mark McGwire: 1,280
- Juan Gonzalez: 1,298
- Alex Rodriguez: 1,301
- Harmon Killebrew: 1,319
- Albert Pujols: 1,320
- Kyle Schwarber: 1,321
