Votto returns after one day on IL

August 3rd, 2020

Reds first baseman Joey Votto returned from the injured list on Monday, one day after going on it. Outfielder Aristides Aquino was optioned to the Reds' alternate site prior to Monday's game against the Indians at Great American Ball Park.

Major League Baseball has instituted a COVID-19 list this season, although clubs will not announce which players are placed on it due to privacy laws regarding individuals’ health. Players may address their status if they wish, though they are not required to do so. Merely being placed on an injured list without further explanation is not confirmation that a player has tested positive for COVID-19. For example, potential exposure to a person who has the virus can be sufficient cause.

The last time Votto played was Friday against the Tigers, going 0-for-4 in the Reds' 7-2 loss. Before going on the IL, Votto was 7-for-27 (.259) with two home runs and five RBIs.

Left-hander Anthony DeSclafani was taken off the 10-day IL to make his 2020 debut against the Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. He missed one start with a mild strain of the teres major.
