Checking in with Reds' top prospects in the AFL

October 27th, 2025

CINCINNATI -- Even though the Major and Minor League seasons are over for most professional clubs -- some prospects associated with the Reds are still playing and getting reps with the Peoria Javelinas of the Arizona Fall League.

Here is a look at how it's going.

RHP (Reds’ No. 5 prospect, No. 80 overall prospect)

Lowder, Cincinnati’s 2023 first-round selection, has been making up for lost time after he missed the entire ‘25 Major League season with a right forearm strain and a left oblique strain. Through three games with Peoria, he has a 3.00 ERA with no walks and six strikeouts over six innings.

Pitching on Saturday, Lowder allowed one earned run and two hits over two innings in an 11-2 win. The Reds are looking for the 23-year-old, who debuted in the big leagues near the end of the 2024 season with a 1.17 ERA in six strong starts, to make their rotation out of Spring Training next year.

C (Reds’ No. 2, No. 48 overall)

Still only 19, Duno is playing among prospects who are older and is batting .222 with a .630 OPS in nine games and 27 at-bats.

During the regular season with Single-A Daytona, Duno batted .287/.430/.518 in 113 games and led the Florida State League in on-base percentage, slugging, OPS (.948) and home runs (18).

1B (Reds’ No. 6, No. 94 overall)

Collier's production has taken off recently, and he is batting .256 with an .813 OPS with one home run and 10 RBIs in the AFL. His regular season began with a torn ligament in his left thumb that affected his power, as he batted .279 with a .775 OPS and only four homers in 95 games over three levels after tallying 20 homers with High-A Dayton in 2024.

INF Leo Balcazar (Reds’ No. 23)

Balcazar has gotten the most at-bats among Reds hitters on the Javelinas with 52 and is batting .385 with a .901 OPS, four doubles and nine RBIs. In Saturday's game, he went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.

During 126 regular-season games between Dayton and Double-A Chattanooga, the 21-year-old batted .263 with a .720 OPS and a career-best 12 homers.

RHP (Reds’ No. 30)

A lack of command plagued Hayden during the regular season with Dayton, and it followed him out west. Through four relief appearances totaling two innings in the AFL, he has a 31.50 ERA with 10 walks, six hits and only one strikeout. In 24 starts and 101 1/3 innings for Dayton, the 22-year-old was 4-7 with a 4.09 ERA but had nearly as many walks (72) as he had strikeouts (79).

RHP (NR)

Abel, 26, has appeared in only one game, pitching a scoreless inning of relief with two walks and two strikeouts. A starter during the regular season -- mostly with Chattanooga except for one start for Triple-A Louisville -- he was 4-9 with a 4.55 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) over 124 2/3 innings.

The 25-year-old Harmon was limited to five starts and only 22 2/3 innings with Dayton while posting a 1.59 ERA as he worked his way back from 2024 Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Over seven innings in three AFL games, including two starts, he has a 5.14 ERA with six walks and eight strikeouts.

RHP Trevor Kuncl (NR)

After leading the Southern League with 20 saves while posting a 2.34 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP with 51 strikeouts in 47 appearances and 50 innings for the Lookouts, Kuncl has appeared in four games for the Javelinas with a 7.36 ERA, five walks and nine strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

RHP (NR)

Through two games and 1 2/3 innings with Peoria, Parks has a 5.40 ERA. Moved into a relief role in 2025 after mostly starting for four seasons, Parks had a 5.30 ERA over 30 games (six starts) between Chattanooga and Louisville. A 6.11 walk rate per nine innings was an improvement from 2024 (9.11) but still signified his command issues.
