Ladnier hosts Draft chat with D-backs fans

June 7th, 2019

D-backs director of amateur scouting Deric Ladnier hosted a chat with fans on Twitter following the 2019 MLB Draft. Fans were able to participate by tweeting their questions using the hashtag #DbacksDraft. Here's a recap of the conversation.

Brendan King - @buddyboi94: What did you think about this year's draft?

Ladnier: It was impactful for the organization, given the number of picks we had, and we were able to infuse top-end talent into our system, which was our objective.

Jared - @azsportsfien: Do you envision a scenario where one of the college arms, like [Ryne] Nelson or [Drey] Jameson, progress through the system quickly enough where we might get to see one of them with the big club in September?

Ladnier: We don't anticipate any players from this year's Draft being part of our September callups, but certainly a few of the college arms can rise rapidly through our system.

Mike - @mike_Benn72: Were you surprised that you were able to draft some of these players because you thought they’d go earlier?

Ladnier: In every Draft, there are certain cases where players likely would have gone higher, but slip due to signability. Because of our bonus pool, we were able to select them in what we would consider to be later spots.

Peter - @birbfm: Coke or Pepsi?

Ladnier: Pepsi all the way!

Brandon Winchester - @winchestee1: How many [Draft picks] do you guys expect to sign? I know Matt McClain didn’t sign last year.

Ladnier: We approached this year like we do every year, with the expectation to sign the players we select, especially the higher picks.

Ry Guy - @Whitebird480: Which Draft pick do you see getting called up the quickest?

Ladnier: The higher-drafted college pitchers typically have the best chance to develop quickly and rise through the Minor League system.

Noah - @noahcb_: In how many years can we expect to see some of these prospects wearing the Sedona red?

Ladnier: Players develop at different paces and we do not want to unjustly put unfair expectations, either too high or too low, in the hands of our player development staff. They will monitor the pace to which each and every player is developing.

Peter -‏ @birbfm: What was the organization's highest priority in the Draft?

Ladnier: Honestly, it was to select the best players that were available in the Draft, and especially high picks. You don't prioritize needs, you just select the best talent, whether it's a position player or a pitcher.

Everything D-backs - @EDbacks: MLB player comparison for Corbin Carroll?

Ladnier: I don't like to unjustly label guys. I think Corbin Carroll should develop into Corbin Carroll instead of being compared to a present Major League player. It's not fair to the player or the guy he's being compared to.
