Thumb keeps Arraez out of Wednesday's lineup vs. Padres

SAN FRANCISCO – Giants second baseman is not in Wednesday’s starting lineup against the San Diego Padres due to a lingering thumb injury, although manager Tony Vitello didn’t rule out using the three-time All-Star off the bench.

Arraez apparently injured his thumb during San Francisco’s recent six-game road trip, an injury that doesn’t appear to be serious but one that the team’s brass and coaches would be best treated by extra rest.

Vitello said that Arraez will get his thumb checked out by the medical staff before any further decisions on how to treat the injury are made. Plus, San Francisco has an off day Thursday, which would give Arraez additional time to recover.

“In an ideal world, we win the game today, and he’s able to tally up three days in a row of getting back to where he needs to be,” Vitello told reporters.

Vitello did not provide an update on ace starting pitcher , who left Tuesday’s game after throwing only 62 pitches due to soreness in his left knee. Webb was not seen in the Giants clubhouse, normal for pitchers on a day game after a night game.

There is some encouraging news for the Giants’ bullpen. Left-handed reliever , on the injured list since March 22, is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento and could be activated within the next two weeks.

“I would think within a 10-day window there would be a good chance that something would happen,” Vitello said. “He just continues to make steady progress.”
