Active play is an essential building block for learning. Since 2024, we’ve been bringing sandlot-style baseball back to local elementary schools through the Mariners Recess Takeover, alongside our partner Playworks Pacific Northwest.
Through the first two seasons of the initiative, Recess Takeovers have served five schools, including Cedarhurst Elementary in Burien, Thorndyke Elementary in Tukwila and Emerson Elementary in Seattle.
With help from Mariners players, alumni, Mariners Training Centers coaches and the Mariner Moose, students get the chance to step outside, pick up a bat and ball, and experience the joy of playing together. The program highlights something simple but powerful: when kids stay active, they’re more energized and ready to learn in the classroom.
Players like Cal Raleigh, Andrés Muñoz, Luis Castillo, Luke Raley, Gabe Speier and Randy Arozarena have helped remind students that whether it’s your first time picking up a ball or you’re a seasoned professional, active play is fun for everyone.
