After being the Giants’ headlining acquisition during this year’s Trade Deadline, Marcelo Mayer began his time in the organization with a bang.
Mayer homered in his first rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, aiding a 4-3 win for the River Cats over Las Vegas at Las Vegas Ballpark. Mayer has been on the injured list since June 26 with a bone stress reaction in his left ulna.
Starting at second base, Mayer struck out to lead off the game but crushed his big fly in his second at-bat. He handled a low fastball in a 2-0 count, driving it to straightaway center field.
It was part of a three-run third inning for Sacramento, which made the difference in the game’s result. Left fielder Bo Davidson -- the Giants’ No. 8 prospect -- hit a two-run homer, his second long ball in as many games. Davidson went 4-for-5 overall with three RBIs.

Mayer, meanwhile, finished his day 1-for-2 with a walk in the fifth inning. He was replaced by a pinch-hitter in the sixth as he begins his ramp-up process to get back to the big leagues.
If all goes well, Mayer may be ready to join the Giants for their next road trip, which begins next Tuesday in Cleveland and ends in Boston against Mayer’s former club. The Red Sox sent Mayer, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2021 Draft, to the Giants in exchange for left-hander Erik Miller and outfield prospect Carlos Gutierrez.
“Hopefully, I'm feeling good enough to make that trip,” Mayer said. “I'm excited. I have a lot of love for a lot of people over there in that clubhouse. It'll be good to see those guys, and it'll be a fun experience wearing a different jersey over there.”
