SEATTLE -- Mariners fans are about to have a new way to leave their mark on the organization … literally.
On Wednesday, the club announced a new area inside the center-field gate at T-Mobile Park, dubbed “Legacy Plaza,” which will officially be unveiled prior to the Mariners’ Sept. 3 game against the Athletics.
The plaza will be the location of the organization’s newest statue -- of Mike Cameron and Mark McLemore’s iconic moment raising the American flag -- commemorating both the historic 116-win 2001 team and the 25-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 attack.
Behind the statue will be a wall of 116 commemorative bats and over 2,000 baseball medallions. Fans will be able to purchase a bat or medallion and customize it with a personal message.
Proceeds from the commemorative bats and medallions will benefit Mariners Legacy Field projects to build and restore youth fields in Washington.
“2001 was a momentous time for our community and for the Mariners. The new Legacy Plaza reflects the deep connection between the Mariners and our community, commemorating one of the most meaningful moments in team history, while reinforcing our commitment to creating opportunities for youth across the Pacific Northwest,” club chairman and managing partner John Stanton said in a statement. “The Legacy Plaza brings together our history, our fans and our commitment to the future of baseball and softball in our region.”
The commemorative bats and baseball medallions are on sale for season-ticket holders today, and will open up to the general public tomorrow at 10 a.m. PT.
