Mariners' final fall league games canceled

November 16th, 2020

The Mariners canceled their final two games in the Player Development Fall League over the weekend after two people tested positive for COVID-19 at the team’s facility in Peoria, Ariz., late last week.

The 20-game schedule was slated to finish on Friday and Saturday, but both games were canceled “out of an abundance of caution,” according to the club.

One of the individuals who tested positive had two subsequent negative results, while the other is isolating and following medical guidance. The Mariners conducted contact tracing and follow-up testing with all their players and staff at the Peoria facility and there were no other positive tests.

The league was formed between the Mariners, Padres, Rangers and Royals in order to provide some instructional time and games for some of the younger prospects who didn’t have a chance to play due to the cancellation of all Minor League seasons.

Outfielder Julio Y. Rodriguez, the Mariners’ No. 2 prospect and the No. 15 overall prospect per MLB Pipeline, had already left Peoria to play in the Dominican Winter League. The 19-year-old went 1-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and three strikeouts in his first game for Leones del Escogido on Sunday.
