Through two games, the Mariners’ offense was so extra.
Seattle racked up nine hits while splitting its first two games of the season vs. the Guardians. Would you like to guess how many of those hits went for extra bases? How about all of them.
The Mariners were the first team since at least 1900 without a single through its first two games of a season and just the ninth team during that period with zero singles over any two-game span. Seattle finally broke through with a single in the third inning Saturday, when Cal Raleigh lined a ball into center field.
The Mariners had slugged an MLB-best six homers through Friday's games. Dominic Canzone went deep twice on Opening Day while outfielder Luke Raley homered in each of the first two games. The Mariners got a big three-run clout from 22-year-old second baseman Cole Young during Friday’s victory and offseason acquisition Brendan Donovan also left the yard once.
Donovan and Randy Arozarena accounted for Seattle’s first two doubles while Leo Rivas hit the team’s first triple.
Conspicuously absent have been Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez, Seattle’s leaders in XBHs last season. Raleigh’s 84 extra-base hits ranked third in the Majors and were the most by a Mariner since Ken Griffey Jr. had 92 such knocks in 1998.
The single for Raleigh ended an 0-for-8 start to his season. But he quickly found his way to second anyway ... with a stolen base.
