SEATTLE -- The Mariners found out Thursday that starting catcher Mike Zunino will miss a few weeks due to an ankle injury. On Friday, the Seattle organization lost yet another backstop.
Mike Marjama informed the Mariners of his retirement on Friday. Marjama, 28, had been playing at Triple-A Tacoma since being optioned on April 20, batting .247 with five home runs during his 43 games with the Rainiers. He caught Felix Hernandez at Opening Night in 2018.
Marjama will be taking a position with the National Eating Disorders Association. The backstop has been open about his personal struggles with eating disorders, which began when he cut weight for wrestling in high school.

Tacoma also just lost Chris Herrmann to the big league roster. Together, Marjama, Herrmann and David Freitas -- also currently on the Mariners' 25-man roster -- have handled the bulk of the innings behind the plate for the Mariners' affiliate. Garrett Kennedy, a 25-year-old with 225 games of Minor League experience, figures to get more playing time for Tacoma.
