Athletics All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a torn meniscus in his right knee, retroactive to Saturday. The A’s recalled catcher Brian Serven from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move on Sunday.
According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Langeliers suffered the injury while running the bases and is deciding whether to undergo a surgical procedure that would end his season. The A’s haven’t confirmed whether Langeliers will require surgery.
The 28-year-old’s name has been circulating in trade rumors of late, but the injury likely eliminates any chance of him being dealt before the Aug. 3 Trade Deadline.
One of the best catchers in baseball, Langeliers started behind the plate for the American League All-Star team earlier this month, becoming the first A’s catcher to do so since Terry Steinbach in 1989.
Langeliers, who is controllable through 2028, has posted a .263/.332/.497 slash with 23 homers over 93 games this season. The Mariners’ Cal Raleigh is the only catcher with more homers than Langeliers (83) over the past three years.
The injury is the latest blow in what has been an extremely difficult stretch for the Athletics. As recently as June 19, the A’s were 38-38 and just a half-game behind the Mariners for first place in the AL West, but they’ve gone 6-22 over their past 28 games entering Sunday. They haven't reached the postseason since 2020.
