LeBlanc, Mariners can't contain LA in opener

August 18th, 2018

SEATTLE -- The Mariners returned home from a 10-game road trip on Friday, but the visiting Dodgers made themselves far more comfy at Safeco Field in rolling to an 11-1 win in the opener of a three-game Interleague series.
The Dodgers clubbed five home runs, much to the delight of a large throng of Los Angeles loyalists who made the trip to Safeco and helped swell the attendance to 46,796, the third largest regular-season crowd in stadium history.
, who'd allowed three homers over his past five starts, gave up three in 4 1/3 innings to the Dodgers and took the loss to fall to 7-3 with a 4.04 ERA
"I made a few mistakes, got away with a couple of them and three I didn't," LeBlanc said. "That's what happens when you run into a good lineup like they have. That's what they do is hit mistakes, especially with stuff like I have. If you're going to make them against guys like that, they're going to make you pay."

The loss equaled Seattle's most-lopsided defeat of the season, a 10-0 setback at Kansas City in the ninth game of the year.
"It's one loss," said Mariners manager Scott Servais. "It hurts when you lose 5-4. If it's 11-1, it is what it is. I don't really want to dwell on it too much. I think the best thing with this one is, get on with the fireworks show after the game, unfortunately. I know we had a really good crowd tonight and we got nothing going. We just didn't play a good ballgame."

The Mariners remain 4 1/2 games back of Houston in the American League West at 70-53, but are now 3 1/2 behind Oakland for the AL's No. 2 Wild Card after the A's beat the Astros with a 10th inning walkoff homer Friday night.
Seattle had won five of its last seven games, but that momentum disappeared against Dodgers rookie right-hander (6-4, 3.19 ERA), who allowed just three hits and one run in six innings.
"He's good," said , who went 0-for-3 with a walk in his third game back from his 80-game suspension. "They've got a good, young arm over there. He throws hard. You face some guys that throw 98, but you see it really good. But his fastball gets to you and everything is hard, the breaking ball, the slider or cutter. He's got a bright future ahead."
LeBlanc surrendered leadoff shots to in the third and Manny Machado in the fourth, as well as a two-run blast by in the fourth before being replaced by .
Machado added a second homer off Bergman in the seventh and Matt Kemp followed with a two-run shot.
LeBlanc was making his 20th start of the season since moving into the rotation and is up to 122 2/3 innings after totaling just 68 last year when he spent the entire season in relief for the Pirates. But he said workload isn't an issue.
"I feel good," LeBlanc said. "I think maybe it's just mid-August. Usually there's a second wind coming here soon. Hopefully we catch that and catch a second wind as a team and get rolling and find our way into the playoffs."
The Mariners couldn't muster much of a counter attack other than a solo homer by in the fourth, his 23rd of the season.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
The Mariners loaded the bases in the third with one out when Mitch Haniger reached on a two-base error on a blooper that second baseman dropped in shallow right field, followed by walks to Cano and . But they couldn't cash in as Buehler got to hit into a fielder's choice forceout at home before flew out to the warning track in center to stifle the Mariners in their only real threat when the game was still in contention.

SOUND SMART
The Mariners have lost six straight to the Dodgers, dating back to 2012. The last Seattle victory was on June 8, 2012, when Kevin Millwood and five Mariners relievers combined for a no-hitter in a 1-0 victory at Safeco in a game where Dee Gordon was the Dodgers starting shortstop.

HE SAID IT
"All that was going through my head was go to the plate and put the ball in play and get on base for the team. It was good. It's always a great feeling walking out to the plate and being able to play your first game at home. It's good to get that one out of the way." -- Cano, on his first game back at Safeco, where he was greeted by a mixture of cheers and boos from a crowd that included a lot of Dodgers fans
