Mariners announce ACL & DSL staff for 2022 season

Caballero named manager, Schneider hitting coach, Monzon pitching coach and Giarratano fourth coach for ACL; Concepcion named manager, Fujioka hitting coach, Amancio pitching coach and Nieves fourth coach for DSL

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto, Director of Player Development Emanuel Sifuentes and Senior Director of High Performance Rob Scheidegger announced today the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Mariners and Dominican Summer League (DSL) Mariners staff for the 2022 season.

“Our player development and process throughout the organization starts in Arizona and the Dominican Republic,” Sifuentes said. “We are thrilled to have these coaches round out a strong minor league staff across our affiliates.”

– ACL MARINERS –

Luis Caballero begins his seventh season in the Mariners organization and his first as manager for the ACL Mariners. He has spent each of the last 5 seasons (2017-21) with the DSL Mariners, serving as manager in 2021 and as a coach from 2017-20. He signed with Atlanta as an amateur free agent out of Panama in 2010, appearing in 307 career minor league games with the Braves and Mariners organizations from 2010-15. After his playing career ended, he joined Single-A Clinton in 2016 as a coach.

Brett Schneider begins his third season in the organization and his first as hitting coach for the ACL Mariners. Last season, he served as hitting coach for the DSL Mariners under manager Luis Caballero. Prior to joining the organization, Schneider was the director of baseball operations and a coach at Florida Atlantic University since 2016.

Yoel Monzon begins his seventh season in the organization as pitching coach for the ACL Mariners. He went 7-5 with 3 saves and a 3.94 ERA across 56 career minor league games in the Colorado Rockies organization from 1999-2000 after signing with Colorado as an amateur free agent out of Cuba.

Nico Giarratano enters his first season in the Mariners organization, playing in 61 games in the Mexican League in 2021. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 24th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of San Francisco. Giarratano appeared in 186 career minor league games from 2017-19.

Randy Roetter, ATC returns to the ACL Mariners as athletic trainer, while *Drew Weidner *has been named the team’s strength and conditioning coach after serving as an intern for the ACL Mariners during the 2021 season.

– DSL MARINERS –

Willie Concepcion begins his first season in the Mariners organization as manager for the DSL Mariners. He most recently worked as director of international operations at “The Catching Camp” and also spent time working in the Puerto Rico Instructional Baseball League. Concepcion played college baseball at the College of Staten Island.

Devin Fujioka enters his first season in the organization as hitting coach. In 2021, he served as a baseball volunteer assistant for Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Jose Amancio begins his sixth season in the organization as pitching coach for the DSL Mariners. Prior to joining the Mariners, he spent 4 seasons with the MLB development program as a pitching coach for international talent in the Dominican Republic from 2013-16. The D.R. native went 10-6 with a 4.95 ERA in 28 career minor league appearances in the Oakland Athletics organization from 2000-01.

Hecmart Nieves begins his first season in the Mariners organization. In 2021, he served as a baseball operations assistant in the Dominican Republic for the Detroit Tigers. Nieves played baseball at Ottawa University in Kansas, batting .316 in 80 games from 2017-18.

Jorge Rodriguez, ATC returns to the DSL Mariners as athletic trainer, while Cesar Velazquez joins the DSL Mariners after serving as a performance coach with Low-A Modesto in 2021.
