Rienzo, Phegley named to Futures Game rosters

White Sox catcher Josh Phegley was headed to the Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game, but he received a much more important honor -- his first big league callup.

Now Phegley's Triple-A teammate, Andre Rienzo, will be going to New York by himself.

Phegley, MLB.com's No. 15 White Sox prospect, and Rienzo, No. 9, were selected to represent the White Sox in the 15th annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game on All-Star Sunday, July 14, at Citi Field. Phegley was named to represent the U.S. Team, while Rienzo will be on the World Team.

Phegley, 25, has had a breakout season in Charlotte, posting a .327/.385/.614 slash line with 17 doubles, 13 home runs and 36 RBIs in 53 games. He's also caught 40 percent of would-be basestealers.

The club's first-round pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft missed a good amount of time during his first full season because of a blood disorder known as ITP, but has remained healthy thus far to climb the organizational ladder.

"You got to pay your dues," Phegley said in Spring Training. "This is my fourth camp, and I think it's getting closer to time for me to make an impact on the big league club."

The Futures Game marks Rienzo's second major event of the year. The 25-year-old also pitched for Team Brazil in the World Baseball Classic.

Although Rienzo's overall numbers at Triple-A aren't dominant -- 5-5, 5.53 ERA in 15 starts -- he's come on lately, posting a 2.61 ERA and .244 average against in his last seven starts.

The 15th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game takes place at 1 p.m. CT on All-Star Sunday at Citi Field in New York and can be seen live on MLB.com, ESPN2 and ESPN2 HD and followed live on MLB.com's Gameday. In addition, XM Radio will broadcast play-by-play coverage of the event live on MLB Network Radio XM 89. MLB.com will also provide complete coverage before, during and after the game. Also, for the first time, fans determined the final player on the U.S. and World Team rosters by casting their votes in the All-Star Sunday Futures Finalists ballot. There were five candidates for each team, with voting ending on Sunday at 10:59 p.m. CT.

Outfielder Courtney Hawkins, the White Sox No. 1 prospect, was named one of the five Futures Finalists for the U.S. team, giving White Sox fans an opportunity to give Rienzo and Phegley more company in New York.

Hawkins is ranked No. 60 on MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list. The White Sox selected him with the 13th overall selection of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft and he has quickly moved through the Minor Leagues. Hawkins reached Class A Advanced Winston-Salem last year and returned there this season.

Hawkins, 19, was the third-youngest player in the Carolina League on Opening Day and has looked his age at times. He is hitting .181 with 83 strikeouts in 44 games, but he has 20 extra-base hits and his 13 home runs rank second in the league.
