Upon video review, B.J. Upton's homer ruled double

PHILADELPHIA -- After rounding the bases with what he thought was his first home run in more than a month, Braves center fielder B.J. Upton found himself on the wrong end of the reversal that followed a replay review at Citizens Bank Park on Sunday night.

Upton was initially awarded a home run when he began the fourth inning by driving Phillies lefty Cliff Lee's first-pitch fastball to right-center field. The ball deflected off a fan's hand as it cleared the metal railing that stands at the top of the outfield wall.

Upon request from Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, umpires went to the video room to determine whether the ball would have cleared the wall without the fan's interference. After a lengthy review, the umpires returned to the field and reversed their call, leaving Upton with a ground-rule double.

Upton, who returned from the disabled list Saturday, has not homered since hitting two against the Giants on June 15. After returning to second base, Upton scored on a Jason Heyward two-out single that gave the Braves a 3-1 lead.

"I looked at it," Upton said after Atlanta's 4-1 victory. "It's debatable. But I guess they thought otherwise. We ended up scoring -- that's all that matters. It would have been a little more frustrating if we hadn't come across a couple runs that inning."

In the bottom of the second, the Braves benefited from the umpiring crew's decision to reverse a home run that was initially awarded Carlos Ruiz. After a quick video review, the umpires determined that Ruiz's drive to left field did not clear the metal railing atop the outfield wall before bouncing back into play.
