Marte, Kelly play like a pair to build around

Whatever moves Arizona makes this week, count on duo as part of future

July 25th, 2019

PHOENIX -- With all the focus on who might be dealt over the next week if the D-backs are indeed sellers at the July 31 Trade Deadline, center fielder and catcher are two players who figure to be big parts of Arizona’s future.

The pair combined to drive in five runs on Wednesday afternoon at Chase Field as the D-backs beat the Orioles, 5-2, to capture the three-game series and finish the homestand at 3-4.

Kelly hit a three-run homer in the fourth, while Marte added a solo shot in the sixth.

D-backs general manager Mike Hazen said earlier this week that the organization’s goal is to field a team every year that can compete for the World Series.

“We’re still building toward what we want to ultimately become,” Hazen said on Monday. “Having a team that goes out there and plays hard every night for the fans and represents for the city and state and organization and competes and vies for playoff appearances, I think that’s something to be proud of. It’s not the [ultimate] goal that we have established for ourselves.”

So if Hazen decides that his team, which has hovered right around the .500 mark for most of the season and is 52-51, needs to start looking more to the future, then players like left-hander and outfielder , both of whom are eligible for free agency after 2020, might be dealt in the next week.

Marte and Kelly are a pair that Arizona most certainly will build around.

Kelly is not eligible for salary arbitration until after the 2020 season and can’t become a free agent until after ’24.

As for Marte, he signed an extension before last season that runs through 2022, with club options for ’23 and ’24.

Kelly came to the D-backs in the offseason deal that sent Paul Goldschmidt to St. Louis. He has since established himself as an outstanding pitch framer, ranking near the top of those metrics throughout the year. On the offensive side of things, Kelly has grown by leaps and bounds, compiling an .882 OPS through Wednesday’s game.

“[Kelly] continues to be a very consistent offensive player for us,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said.

Things began to click for Kelly on May 4, when he hit his first homer of the year at Coors Field. He was hitting just .182 at the time with a .520 OPS, but the blast boosted his confidence and he has been a force at the plate since.

Kelly’s development has gone so well that in late May, the D-backs scrapped the three-catcher rotation they had used since 2017 in order to get Kelly more playing time.

Marte, meanwhile, was voted to start the All-Star Game at second base and he has played outstanding defense in center field. Marte leads the National League in hits with 128, and heading into Wednesday’s game, his .945 OPS was ninth in the league.

“[He’s] been incredible,” shortstop said. “He came up and you obviously knew he was talented and athletic and had bat speed, but this year for him to put together the approach and really learn his strike zone and know what pitches to swing at and how to get the ball in the air properly. He’s always hit the ball hard, but now he’s doing damage hitting the ball in the air the right way.”

Arizona now takes to the road fox six games, and while the D-backs are still within shouting distance of the second NL Wild Card spot, they are running out of time to show Hazen that they are serious contenders.

After an off-day on Thursday, the D-backs open a four-game series against the Marlins, who own the worst record in the NL. The buzz on talk radio in Phoenix this week has been about whether Ray will still be in an Arizona uniform to make his scheduled start in Miami on Sunday afternoon.

One thing’s for sure, though -- Marte and Kelly will be around on Aug. 1, and for a while after that.
