Peralta on the mend following shoulder surgery

D-backs outfielder expected to be ready for Spring Training

August 31st, 2019

PHOENIX -- D-backs outfielder had successful surgery on his right shoulder AC joint Friday and he is expected to miss the rest of the season, but be ready in time for Spring Training.

“Obviously he’ll be out for the rest of the season, but we’re expecting full health,” D-backs GM Mike Hazen said. “No structural issues with any of the surgery, everything else looked good in there.”

Peralta had dealt with soreness and inflammation in the AC joint a number of times this season and it finally got to the point where he needed to have it cleaned out by Reds team doctor Timothy Kremchek.

“The comments from the doctor were that everything went as planned and he should be 100 percent ready for Spring Training,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.

Marte still hurting

D-backs All-Star was removed early from Thursday’s game after experiencing discomfort in his right hamstring. He was also removed from Tuesday night’s game in San Francisco when he experienced similar symptoms.

Marte was not in the starting lineup Friday night against the Dodgers and Lovullo did not rule out keeping him out of Saturday night’s game as well.

“He’d been complaining about the leg cramping and it jumped up again,” Lovullo said. “I just felt like I had to be the parent in the room yesterday and the parent in the room today to get him off his feet and try to get ahead of this. It’s still that same situation, it’s the cramping and general discomfort that he’s experiencing.”

Marte played in 127 of the D-backs' first 134 games this year, moving from center field to second base to shortstop, depending on matchups. He missed a few games in June with cramping in his left groin and a few in August with back stiffness.

“We’ve certainly asked a lot of him in the amount of games that he’s played, and then the type of workload between second base, center field and a little bit of shortstop,” Lovullo said. “There’s a little bit of curiosity in how that played a role in [the injuries], if it did or didn’t. We’re going to research that for sure.”
