Greinke covers plenty of ground vs. White Sox

D-backs right-hander hits 85 pitches, swings bat in 2 plate appearances

March 18th, 2019

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. --  got up to 85 pitches in his second-to-last start of the spring in the D-backs' 7-3 win over the White Sox on Sunday at Salt River Fields.

“You’ve got to try to ideally throw at least a game where you’re throwing almost a full game and using all your pitches, in and out,” said Greinke, who struck out six over his 5 2/3 innings. “That’s what today was. It was a lot of that, a little bit of everything.”

Greinke became the first Arizona pitcher to swing a bat in a game -- flying out in the third and hitting into a double play in the fifth. And it looks like Greinke is going to abandon the harder slider that he worked on earlier in the spring.

“I’ve been working on throwing a harder slider all spring,” he said. “The last bullpen it felt good, but today it wasn’t that good so I’ll probably go back to the normal one.”

Veteran Alex Avila, who belted his first spring homer in the win, caught Greinke for the first time other than in an early-camp bullpen session, and now each of the four potential Arizona catchers have had a chance to be behind the plate for at least one of his starts.

Greinke has been known to prefer one catcher and last year it was Jeff Mathis behind the plate for all 33 of his starts. This year with Mathis gone via free agency, the D-backs have yet to settle on one catcher for Greinke.

“One guy is always ideal, but I like offense,” Greinke said while adding that he didn’t have a strong preference of which guy it was. “If it makes a lot of sense to do a lefty/righty platoon, then, I mean, I like scoring runs. That’s fine, too.”

Lamb leaves game

First baseman Jake Lamb left Sunday’s game after three innings with tightness in his back. The injury is not thought to be serious and no tests have been scheduled, manager Torey Lovullo said.

Lamb, who felt the tightness when he hit a deep fly to right in the second inning, will get some treatment at the complex on Monday and be evaluated.

“He actually made a good pass at the ball, and that’s what I told him,” Lovullo said. “I said, ‘That was probably one of your better swings of the spring.’ But he just felt it tighten up after that. We just made that decision based on my own back history. It just wasn’t worth it to me.”

Action for Dyson

Outfielder Jarrod Dyson, who has been sidelined this spring with a strained left oblique, saw his first Cactus League action on Sunday -- playing both right and center field while drawing a pair of walks in two plate appearances.

Jones update

Outfielder Adam Jones played in an intrasquad backfield game again on Sunday -- playing in the field for the first time. In his previous couple of backfield games, Jones had only hit.

“He looked good, looked really good,” Lovullo said. “He played defense, played normal. Went in and out five times, hit third each time. Those are things we want to see. He’s very comfortable. He knows exactly who he is and how he’s feeling. He’s able to articulate that. We trust where he’s at in all parts of his game, so it’s easy to evaluate him.”

Monday is an off-day for the D-backs and Lovullo said Jones would go through some light work at the complex, and Jones likely will make his Cactus League debut on Tuesday night against the Padres.

Up next

Following Monday's off-day, right-hander Matt Andriese is scheduled to start for the D-backs as they square off against the Padres at 6:40 p.m. MT on Tuesday at Salt River Fields.
