Giants name Duggar Opening Day center fielder

March 19th, 2019

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- arrived at Spring Training needing to prove that he was healthy after his promising rookie season was cut short by September shoulder surgery.

Any potential concerns have largely been dispelled. Duggar has enjoyed a strong showing in Cactus League play, going 11-for-32 (.344) with an .820 OPS in 10 games. On Monday, manager Bruce Bochy confirmed that he expects Duggar to be the Giants’ starting center fielder on Opening Day in San Diego.

“He’s good,” Bochy said following the Giants’ 5-2 win over the White Sox at Camelback Ranch. “He’s gone back to back. He feels good. That’s three out of four. We’ll ramp it up even more after the day off.”

Mac Williamson and Gerardo Parra appear to be in line to flank Duggar in the corner outfield spots, though president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi has said he would like to add another outfielder before the start of the regular season. The Giants also have Cameron Maybin and Rule 5 Draft pick Drew Ferguson in their current outfield mix.

Parra, who is in camp as a non-roster invitee, started in right field against the White Sox and made an outstanding throw to nail Adam Engel, who attempted to advance from first to third base on Alfredo Gonzalez’s single in the second inning.

“I’ve been watching him throw all Spring Training, and everybody’s like, ‘Man, that guy’s got an absolute canon,’” right-hander Tyler Beede said. “I’m glad he had the opportunity to show it off.”

Bullpen competition heats up

After spending most of the offseason stockpiling relievers, the Giants are now facing a bit of a dilemma: They have too many good arms for not enough bullpen spots. Over 10 relievers have a legitimate chance to make the team, and Bochy knows the Giants won’t be able to keep all of them.

“We have two to three spots open, and you look at the numbers and see, we’ve got seven or eight really good candidates,” Bochy said. “There are going to be some really difficult calls here at the end.”

Rule 5 Draft pick Travis Bergen struck out four over 1 2/3 scoreless innings against the White Sox on Monday, extending his impressive run this spring. The 25-year-old left-hander has not allowed a run in 8 2/3 Cactus League innings, and has racked up 10 strikeouts.

“He’s been right on,” Bochy said. “He’s done all he can do to force the issue, and that’s what you’re hoping [for]. He’s thrown the ball really, really well all spring. He’s got the fastball, it’s got good life to it, the curveball. He’s a very poised kid. With all at stake, it’s good to see him show the composure that he’s showing.”

Right-hander Trevor Gott, who is out of options, also pitched two scoreless innings to maintain his perfect 0.00 ERA this spring.

“He’s had a great spring,” Bochy said. “Again, one of the candidates. He’s just gotten better, too.”

Roster moves

The Giants reassigned outfielder Mike Gerber and infielder Levi Michael to Minor League camp on Monday. 41 players remain in big league camp with 10 days to go until Opening Day.

Up next

The Giants will enjoy an off-day on Tuesday before hosting an Indians split squad on Wednesday at Scottsdale Stadium at 7:05 p.m. PT. Left-hander Drew Pomeranz will start for San Francisco and oppose Cleveland right-hander Adam Plutko.
