SEATTLE -- Bryan Woo had a full week to simmer about being battered in Baltimore, but he also knew he’d get the chance to redeem himself against the same lineup his next time out.
The Mariners’ electric right-hander could not have rebounded in a more emphatic way.
Donning new cleats that were gifted to him by patients at Seattle Children’s hospital, Woo twirled seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts to lift the Mariners to a 3-0 victory that clinched their first series win in two weeks.
He was buoyed by a three-spot from the Mariners’ offense in the first inning, sparked by a two-out single from Josh Naylor in his return to the lineup after missing two games.
The slugging first baseman reached second base on a fielding error, then scored on an RBI double into the left-field corner from Cole Young, after Dominic Canzone drew a four-pitch walk. Rookie Colt Emerson followed with a 106.4 mph two-run single through the right-side hole.
Woo was at just 80 pitches when he was sent out for the eighth inning but surrendered a leadoff single to Leody Taveras, who quickly stole second base. Then an eight-pitch battle with Colton Cowser ensued, ending with Woo issuing his first walk of the day, thus concluding his masterful outing.
He walked off to a standing ovation, with Eduard Bazardo working out of a jam and Andrés Muñoz locking down his 12th save after a leadoff walk and throwing a first-pitch ball to each of his five batters.
