The Pirates came into this offseason looking to be aggressive and add to their outfield mix. On Thursday, they made their first swing, acquiring a Major League-ready Top 100 prospect.

The Pirates acquired outfielder , the No. 85 prospect in the game per MLB Pipeline, and right-hander Jesus Travieso from the Red Sox in exchange for Johan Oviedo, Tyler Samaniego and Adonys Guzman.

TRADE DETAILS
Pirates receive: OF Jhostynxon Garcia, RHP Jesus Travieso
Red Sox receive: RHP Johan Oviedo, LHP Tyler Samaniego, C Adonys Guzman

Garcia, who will turn 23 next week, made a five-game cameo with the Red Sox at the end of the 2025 season, but did most of his damage with Triple-A Worcester, where he slashed .271/.334/.498 with 18 home runs over 351 plate appearances. Considered a quality defender in center field with plus speed and power, he was the Red Sox's No. 3 prospect in a crowded outfield mix.

Garcia has power potential, but will need to continue to develop as a hitter, mainly against offspeed pitches and making more consistent contact in the zone. The upside makes those development points worth the risk for his new club.

The Pirates’ outfield is anchored by Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, both of whom had down years in 2025. Garcia will have the chance to make an impact on the Major League team, but isn’t believed to be viewed as the definitive third outfielder at this time. The Pirates could continue to improve their outfield talent pool, as this won’t be the last move the Pirates make this winter.

Travieso, 18, pitched seven games with the Red Sox's Single-A affiliate. He was not on Boston's top prospect list.

Oviedo is the headliner going back to the Red Sox. He went 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA in his nine starts in 2025 after returning from Tommy John surgery and a lat injury that sidelined him for almost two years. He made 48 starts with the Pirates over parts of three seasons after being acquired from the Cardinals in 2022.

The Pirates have one of the best collections of young pitching in the sport, so they came into the winter knowing they could flip starting pitching for position-player help.

Samaniego was added to the 40-man roster last month to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. Guzman was selected in the fifth round of the 2025 Draft and played one game with Single-A Bradenton.

The Pirates’ roster is now at 39 players, giving them some flexibility to add a player at next week’s Winter Meetings, either via trade, free agency or the Rule 5 Draft.
