Johnson’s No. 51 will be the fifth number retired in franchise history, joining fellow Hall of Famers Ken Griffey Jr. (#24), Edgar Martinez (#11), Ichiro Suzuki (#51)—and league-wide—Jackie Robinson (#42).
Randy arrived in Seattle in 1989 after a trade with the Montreal Expos. The “Big Unit” had his breakout season in 1993 (19-8, 3.24 ERA), recording the first of six 300+ strikeout seasons. As a Mariner, he posted a 130-74 record with a 3.42 ERA and 2,162 strikeouts—while tossing 51 complete games.
He remains near the top of nearly every major pitching category in club history—2nd in strikeouts and 3rd in wins, starts and innings pitched. In 1990, he threw our franchise's first no-hitter, and in 1995, he won our first-ever Cy Young. Randy was inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame in 2012 and the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015.
