The Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers will honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. Game time is 1:10 p.m.
All players will wear commemorative apparel including special caps, jerseys and socks. Major League Baseball will donate 100% of the profits from retail sales of the apparel items to charities that support children and families of U.S. military members who have died in service to our nation.
At 3:00 p.m. PDT, the Mariners vs. Rangers game will pause to observe an extended moment of silence. During the pregame program, weather permitting, there will be a fly-over by a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster cargo transport plane, and Technical Sergeant Freddie Garza of Joint Base Lewis-McChord will perform the National Anthem and God Bless America (mid 7th inning).
The Mariners will pay tribute to the service of two WWII U.S. Navy veterans. The game's ceremonial first pitch will be delivered by Robert Ferguson of Sumner, Pierce County. Ferguson joined the Navy in 1943 and became a combat aviator. He served with distinction in Southern France in Operation Dragoon, the Philippines, the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle for Okinawa.
During the 4th inning, the Salute to Those Who Serve recognition, presented by Holland America Line, will honor Herman Huether of Rosalia, WA, who enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served in the Carrier Air Service Unit 12 on the troop ship USS General M.M. Patrick supporting B 29 bombers and F4 and F5 fighter jets in combat off Guam and the Mariana Islands in the western North Pacific Ocean. Mr. Huether lives in the Spokane area and is still going strong at the age of 98.
During Monday's game, Mariners and Rangers players will wear camouflage caps with commemorative patches featuring five stars representing the five branches of the U.S. military. Jerseys will have matching sleeve patches and green twill will replace team colors on the lettering on the front and back of the jerseys. Stance socks will include camouflage designs and the commemorative patch. Bases will be adorned with commemorative jewels.
Royalties from retail sales of the commemorative apparel (jerseys, caps, socks) will be donated by MLB to various charities supporting children and families grieving the loss of a military loved one. The organizations Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors and Folds of Honor Foundation will receive a minimum $500,000 collective donation.
