DETROIT -- The Mariners have been on a roll on the road recently, but they couldn't beat Mother Nature at Comerica Park on Friday as the opening game of a three-game set with the Tigers was postponed by rain.
The teams will attempt to make the game up as part of a straight doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:10 p.m. PT, with the second game starting approximately 30 minutes after the first game ends.
Left-handers Marco Gonzales of the Mariners and Matthew Boyd of the Tigers were initially set to square off in Friday's game and will instead pitch in the opening game on Saturday.
Saturday's scheduled starters -- Felix Hernandez (Mariners) and Michael Fulmer (Tigers) -- will pitch the second game. Both games will be televised live on ROOT Sports and MLB.TV.
Mariners acting manager Manny Acta, who is filling in while Scott Servais attends his daughter's graduation, said Mike Zunino will catch Gonzales and David Freitas will work behind the plate with Hernandez.
That will allow Zunino to come back and team with James Paxton in the series finale on Sunday at 10:10 a.m. PT.
All that is dependent on weather, as rain remains in the forecast for Saturday morning, though the hope is it clears off by early afternoon.
The Mariners are 13-7 on the road this year and 7-2 in their last nine away games.
Friday's weather cancellation was the second of the season for the Mariners. They're already scheduled to face the Twins on Monday at 4:10 p.m. PT in Minneapolis in a makeup from April 8, when freezing temperatures wiped out the final game of a three-game series at Target Field.
The Tigers have now had eight games postponed this season, seven at Comerica Park and one at Pittsburgh.
Both teams will be able to add a 26th player to participate in the doubleheader. The Mariners are likely to add a pitcher to bolster their bullpen, with Roenis Elias one possibility, though he was scheduled to start Saturday for the Triple-A Rainiers in Sacramento.
