BOSTON -- The Yankees placed left-hander Ryan Weathers on the paternity list prior to Wednesday’s game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, recalling right-hander Jake Bird from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to take his place on the roster.
Weathers, 26, was not scheduled to pitch in Boston, with left-hander Max Fried and right-hander Cam Schlittler lined up for the remaining games. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said he expects Weathers to make his next scheduled start, which would be Saturday at Houston.
On Sunday, Weathers tossed 7 1/3 scoreless innings in a 7-0 win over the Royals, picking up his first victory in pinstripes. Overall, Weathers is 1-2 with a 3.18 ERA through five starts.
Weathers and his wife, Thayer, welcomed a baby boy, which they announced on Instagram. Players on the paternity list can miss up to three games.
Bird began the season on the Opening Day roster. The 30-year-old was optioned to the Minors on April 13 after posting a 1-1 record and a 7.71 ERA in eight relief appearances.
