Major League Baseball announced Thursday that the Blue Jays and Nationals have received the 2019 Bobby Murcer Award for contributing the most of any team in their respective leagues to the Baseball Assistance Team (B.A.T.).

MLB’s 30 clubs combined to donate a record $3.4 million during this spring’s fundraising drive for B.A.T., an organization dedicated to confidentially assisting members of the sport’s family who are in need of charitable donations, ranging from financial grants to health-care resources to rehabilitative counseling. The league has collectively raised more than $33 million for B.A.T. over the first 17 years of the fundraiser.

“As players, we know how important B.A.T. is to everyone involved in this game,” said Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman in an official release. “The baseball community is lucky to have a group that will lend assistance and do what they can for those in need. I’m proud of the Washington Nationals organization, my teammates, coaches and staff who continue to donate on a yearly basis. We are honored to accept this award for the second straight year and we pledge to contribute year in and year out.”

Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo added, “This award means a lot to me personally, for myself and my family, as well as to our entire Blue Jays organization.”

B.A.T. assisted a record amount of applicants in 2018, with more than $4.5 million in grants. The organization has awarded more than $42 million to 4,300-plus members of the baseball family -- which includes current and former Major and Minor League personnel, scouts, umpires, athletic trainers and many more figures connected with the game -- since its endowment was established in 1991.
