Nationals recall Andrew Alvarez

The Washington Nationals recalled left-handed pitcher Andrew Alvarez from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday and optioned right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz on Saturday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations Paul Toboni made the announcements.

Alvarez, 26, ranks fourth in all of Minor League Baseball with 27 strikeouts through four starts this season. He went 2-0 with a 4.66 ERA and a .183 opponents’ batting average in those four starts (19.1 IP) for the Red Wings. Alvarez joins the Nationals after recording 25 strikeouts in 15.1 innings over his last three starts.

Alvarez’s best start came on April 2 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (NYY) when he struck out 10 batters in 5.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless ball to earn his first win of the season. He last pitched on April 14 vs. Buffalo (TOR), striking out nine while allowing three earned runs on six hits with one walk in 5.1 innings of work.

Washington’s 2023 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, Alvarez went 1-1 with a 2.31 ERA in five games (five starts) during his rookie season of 2025. He pitched to a 1.15 ERA (2 ER/15.2 IP) in his first three career starts. He ranked second in Washington's system (4th in all of Triple-A) with 123.0 innings and third in the organization (10th in Triple-A) with 114 strikeouts at the time of his Major League debut on Sept. 1 vs. Miami.
