ST. PETERSBURG -- The Blue Jays are hoping that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will return from the seven-day concussion injured list when he's eligible Saturday against the Yankees in the Bronx. So far, that hope looks pretty realistic.
The Blue Jays star completed baseball activities on Tuesday and Wednesday at Tropicana Field prior to the team’s games against the American League East-leading Rays. Guerrero fielded ground balls, ran on the field and hit inside the batting cage. Wednesday's workout was his greatest amount of baseball activity since he went on the IL on Saturday, one day after a collision at third base with the Yankees’ George Lombard Jr. left Guerrero concussed.
The club will continue to monitor how the six-time All-Star feels over the next few days. Guerrero will undergo a concussion assessment test during Wednesday's game, and there is a chance he will play in a Minor League rehab game with Single-A Dunedin on Thursday, according to manager John Schneider.
“As soon as he's ready, feeling good and cleared and he feels like he's got his timing, we're going to try to get him back in there,” Schneider said.
Guerrero is batting .263 with seven home runs and a .693 OPS in what has been a very frustrating year for him.
