PHILADELPHIA -- Rhys Hoskins continues to hit home runs at a record pace, but the Phillies had to love what they saw Wednesday night from Aaron Nola.
Nola allowed just four hits and one run and struck out a career-high 11 batters in seven innings during an 8-1 victory over the Marlins at Citizens Bank Park. Nola is probably the only lock in the Phillies' Opening Day rotation next season, but he had struggled recently, posting a 6.59 ERA in his previous five starts. He also had a 10.67 ERA in three previous starts this season against Miami.
"I was just trying to stay simple tonight," Nola said. "They got me good this year, but I was just trying to stay simple and stay down in the zone and throw my pitches for strikes."

Marlins center fielder Christian Yelich got to Nola in the third, hitting a solo home run to right field. Hoskins hit his 17th homer of the season in the fifth. He is the fastest player on record to reach that mark, getting there in just 33 career games.

The Phillies won the season series against the Marlins for the eighth consecutive year. They are 87-61 in that stretch.
While Nola set a career high, Marlins starter Dan Straily set one of his own, though his qualifies as a lowlight. His eight earned runs allowed were the most in any career start.

"That was the worst game, results wise, that I've ever pitched in my life," Straily said. "There's nothing of value to take away from it. It was weird because I felt really good out there, I felt like I was making some pretty good pitches."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Franco sneaks one into the corner: The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Aaron Altherr doubled to score Hoskins from first base.

Maikel Franco then hit a ball down the left-field line, allowing Altherr to score to make it 3-1.

"That game reminded me of when I was here in 2009, '10, '11 -- good pitching, good hitting, power, good defense," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. "Very reminiscent of when I first arrived. Good to see."
"El Torito" crushes one:Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer into the second deck in right field to hand the Phillies a 7-1 lead. Herrera has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball for months. He entered the night hitting .343 with a .952 OPS since June 1. He has hit safely in 23 of his past 24 games.

"The Hoskins home run, I was trying to get in and off [the plate], it was in and off the plate and he still hit a home run. For the Herrera one, I was trying to get up and in a little bit," Straily said of the pair of well-executed pitches that still led to Phillies' homers.

Marlins: Right-hander Jose Urena (13-6, 3.61) starts in the series finale for Miami at 7:05 p.m. ET on Thursday. Urena leads the rotation in ERA and WHIP (1.22) on the season.
Phillies: Phillies right-hander Jake Thompson (1-2, 5.23 ERA) faces the Marlins Thursday night in their series finale at Citizens Bank Park. Thompson has a 4.91 ERA (six earned runs in 11 innings) in two starts this season.
