Gregorius starts vs. LHP: 'Didi has got to hit'

September 22nd, 2021

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies manager Joe Girardi is standing by .

It is no secret that Gregorius is having arguably the worst season of his career. He entered Wednesday batting .211 with 11 home runs, 48 RBIs and a .636 OPS. His 0.0 WAR ranks 31st out of 33 shortstops with at least 350 plate appearances, according to FanGraphs.

Gregorius hit seventh against Orioles left-hander Keegan Akin on Wednesday at Citizens Bank Park, which was somewhat surprising because Gregorius is batting .156 with a .544 OPS against left-handers.

Why not Luke Williams, who is batting .293 with a .756 OPS against lefties? Girardi explained that Akins has reverse splits, which is true, although they are hardly dramatic. Right-handers have batted .286 with an .856 OPS against Akins, compared to left-handers hitting .312 with an .890 OPS.

But then Girardi revealed why he is sticking with Gregorius, regardless of splits.

“And if we’re going to do anything, Didi has got to hit,” Girardi said. “That’s the bottom line. I like the experience that he has going out there every day in this type of situation. [I'm] going with the experience.”

The left side of the Phillies’ infield is thin with Freddy Galvis and Ronald Torreyes playing third base since Alec Bohm was optioned last month.

Is there any shot Bohm could rejoin the Phillies at some point over the final 10 games? It could allow the club to play Galvis at shortstop.

“I mean, anything is a possibility, right?” Girardi said. “We continue to talk about it. No changes yet.”
