Kapler maps out pitching plans for final push

September 22nd, 2019

CLEVELAND -- While the Phillies still haven’t decided which hurler will start the first game of their Tuesday doubleheader against the Nationals, manager Gabe Kapler indicated that  will likely get the ball in the night game.

“I’m not going to set it in stone, but I think the likelihood is he’ll take the night game,” Kapler said of Nola. “We’re still TBD on the day game.”

Nola, who has posted a 3.75 ERA and 4.01 FIP this year, is 3 1/3 innings away from posting his second consecutive 200-inning season for Philadelphia. He has recorded 220 strikeouts this year, which ranks fifth in the National League behind only Jacob deGrom, Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer and Patrick Corbin.

Beyond the Phillies’ impending decision for Game 1 on Tuesday, the rest of Philadelphia’s rotation will remain the same. Zach Eflin will start on Monday, Drew Smyly will take the ball on Wednesday and Jason Vargas is scheduled to pitch the finale of the five-game series against Washington on Thursday.

The Nationals and Brewers are currently tied in the standings, occupying both of the National League Wild Card spots. The Phillies entered Sunday’s affair against the Indians 5 1/2 games out of a Wild Card slot with nine games to play.

Latest on Dominguez

Seranthony Dominguez (ulnar collateral ligament damage in right elbow) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday. If that goes well, he’ll return for additional mound work on Thursday and Sunday of next week.

“In theory, [next Sunday] could be a live [batting practice],” Kapler said. “That’s just in theory. I’m not saying that’s what’s going to happen. The highest likelihood [of him returning] is if we survive, survive, survive, then we make one push at the end.”

Regardless if Dominguez can make it back to pitch in potential postseason games next month, the club values the hurdles the righty is clearing before the end of the regular season. While the Phillies are still working through what the offseason plan will look like for Dominguez, setting him up to have a somewhat normal winter is important.

“It gives him peace of mind, it gives the club peace of mind that we worked a strong process and made good decisions along the way,” Kapler said. “Every time he comes out of a bullpen and feels good and is prepared to take the next step, it’s good for everybody.”

Dominguez has a 4.01 ERA and 4.03 FIP in 27 appearances for the Phillies this season. The 24-year-old hasn’t appeared in a game since June 5.

Bruce back in outfield?

Jay Bruce started all three games at Progressive Field because of the Phillies’ ability to utilize the designated hitter in an AL park, but Kapler is still unsure if Bruce will be able to play the outfield when the club returns to National League play this week.

“We’re going to keep checking in with him to see how his arm feels,” Kapler said. “I don’t think we have enough information yet. He’s thrown out to 100 feet.”

Bruce hasn’t played the field since returning from a flexor sprain in his right elbow earlier this month. He slugged a homer in Philadelphia’s 9-4 win over Cleveland on Saturday night.

The mighty Quinn

Outfielder Roman Quinn (groin strain) has continued his running progression, but the 26-year-old is still not ready for game action.

“I think the more we stay in this, the longer we stay in this, the more likely it is that we push his progression a little bit,” Kapler said. “We’re trying to get him ready to play as soon as possible. We’ll see.”

Quinn has slashed .213/.298/.370 with four homers and eight steals in 44 games for the Phillies this season. He has been on the injured list since Aug. 17.
