Phillies' all-time Top 5 in-season trades

Will the Phillies swing a deal before the July 31 Trade Deadline? Sometimes it takes years to determine how well a team did in a trade. With the benefit of hindsight, the following are the five most notable trades in franchise history that were conducted during the regular season, according to Todd Zolecki. Agree? Disagree? 1. July 29, 2009: Phillies acquire left-hander Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from Indians for right-hander Carlos Carrasco, infielder Jason Donald, catcher Lou Marson and right-hander Jason Knapp.

Lee went 7-4 with a 3.39 ERA in 13 starts in the regular season, but 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in five postseason starts to help the Phillies reach the World Series for the second consecutive year. Lee earned folk hero status as a result. None of the prospects the Phillies traded have come back to haunt them.

2. June 18, 1989: Phillies acquire outfielder Lenny Dykstra, right-hander Roger McDowell and a player to be named (right-hander Tom Edens) from the Mets for Juan Samuel.
Dykstra played for the Phillies from 1989-96, helping them win the 1993 National League pennant. He remains an icon in Philadelphia sports, despite his recent personal struggles. McDowell pitched for the Phillies from 1989-91, when they traded him to the Dodgers.

3. May 4, 1975: Phillies receive outfielder Garry Maddox from Giants for first baseman Willie Montanez.
Maddox won seven consecutive Gold Gloves for the Phillies, earning the nickname "Secretary of Defense" while patrolling center field from 1975-86. He helped the Phillies win the 1980 World Series, 1983 National League pennant and five NL East titles.

4. Aug. 19, 2006: Phillies acquire left-hander Jamie Moyer from the Mariners for right-handers Andy Barb and Andrew Baldwin.
The Phillies got Moyer for an unexpected push to the postseason. They fell short, but Moyer helped lead the Phillies to the NL East title in 2007, their first in 14 years, and a World Series championship in 2008, the first in 28 years. Baldwin and Barb never reached the big leagues.

5. July 29, 2010: Phillies acquire right-hander Roy Oswalt from Astros for left-hander J.A. Happ, outfielder Anthony Gose and infielder Jonathan Villar.
Oswalt outpitched Roy Halladay and Cole Hamels down the stretch, going 7-1 with a 1.74 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts). He went 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA in the postseason, taking the loss in Game 4 of the NLCS in San Francisco. Happ and Gose are in the Blue Jays organization these days, while Villar is playing in Triple-A for Houston.
