The Phillies have finalized their coaching staff for the 2019 season, the club announced today:
Chris Young has been elevated to the position of pitching coach after having previously served as assistant pitching coach on manager Gabe Kapler's staff for the 2018 season. Prior to joining the Phillies, Young, 37, spent three years with the Houston Astros, first as a pro scout from 2015-16 and then as MLB scouting supervisor during the 2017 season. Prior to his three seasons with the Astros, Young was a pro scout for the San Diego Padres for five seasons from 2010-14. A former pitcher, Young was selected in the 18th round of the 2002 draft by the Colorado Rockies out of Mississippi State University. In six minor league seasons, Young posted a 3.54 ERA in 266 games (6 starts). He finished his professional career in 2008 as a member of the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League.
Dave Lundquist has been named assistant pitching coach. 2018 marked Lundquist's 11th season with the Phillies and his third with triple-A Lehigh Valley where he most recently served as pitching coach. He previously coached for double-A Reading for three years (2013-15), single-A Clearwater for four (2009-12) and single-A Lakewood for one (2008). Originally selected in the fifth round of the June 1993 draft by the Chicago White Sox, Lundquist, 45, pitched professionally for 12 seasons from 1993-2004, including major league stints with the White Sox (1999) and San Diego Padres (2001-02).
Paco Figueroa has been named major league outfield/baserunning coach, as announced previously. Figueroa had most recently served as the minor league hitting coordinator for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The rest of Kapler's 2019 coaching staff is as follows: Rob Thomson (bench coach), John Mallee (hitting coach), Pedro Guerrero (assistant hitting coach), José David Flores (first base coach), Dusty Wathan (third base coach), Jim Gott (bullpen coach), Bob Stumpo (bullpen catcher/catching coach) and Craig Driver (bullpen catcher/receiving coach).
Additionally, Rick Kranitz will not return to the coaching staff for the 2019 season. Kranitz served the Phillies for three seasons as bullpen coach (2016), assistant pitching coach (2017) and pitching coach (2018).
