CINCINNATI -- Twenty minutes before the start of Wednesday's game against the Phillies at Great American Ball Park, the Reds announced that they placed infielder Kyle Farmer on the injured list with a left oblique injury and recalled second baseman José Peraza from Triple-A Louisville.

Manager David Bell said the injury may have crept up during Farmer’s last at-bat Tuesday, but it was at the very least exacerbated during batting practice before Wednesday’s 8-5 win over Philadelphia.

“His last swing last night, I thought I saw something,” Bell said. “He said it didn't bother him. But he went out today to hit and it grabbed him again.”

The post-Sept. 1 transaction was necessary because Peraza had not spent the required 10 days in the Minor Leagues after he was optioned to Louisville on Aug. 27. In order to bring him back to the Majors early, he had to officially replace a player on the current active roster due to injury.

The Reds were originally planning to promote Peraza on Friday.

Farmer, 29, has played in 90 games for the Reds this season, batting .238 (39-for-164) with six doubles, eight home runs and 25 RBIs. He played third base in the first two games of the Phillies series in place of Eugenio Suarez, who is recovering from a bruised left hand suffered on a hit-by-pitch Sunday in St. Louis.

Peraza, 25, was optioned to Louisville when Joey Votto was reinstated from the IL. In his four appearances for Louisville, he went 9-for-15 with two doubles, an RBI and two stolen bases. In 119 games for the Reds this year entering Wednesday, he was hitting .237 (74-for-312) with 12 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 33 RBIs. Peraza was announced as a pinch-hitter Wednesday but was lifted for Derek Dietrich after a pitching change.

In other injury news, outfielder Nick Senzel was scratched a couple of hours before game time Wednesday. He was diagnosed with an impingement in his right shoulder.

Bell said Senzel was available to hit, but not to play his position in center.

“He said he's had this before,” Bell said. “Just a couple days.”
