MIAMI -- The revolving door continues to spin on the D-backs' roster. Left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray (strained right oblique) returned from the disabled list to make a start on Wednesday at Marlins Park, but prior to the game catcher Alex Avila was placed on the 10-day DL, retroactive to June 24, with a strained right hamstring.
At least starting pitching is getting healthy.
"One by one these guys are coming back, so we're really excited about that," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of Ray, who made his first All-Star Game last season. "We get a guy that was one of our main starters last year. The league recognized him. His numbers showed that he is one of our guys. He's healthy and strong, that means a lot to all of us."
But Avila has not quite recovered from his hamstring injury, and the decision was made to give him the extra time to heal.
"We've been nursing this for five days," Lovullo noted. "He's felt it for a while, but it was the game in Pittsburgh where it really jumped up on him and became uncomfortable. He's been trying to grind away at it.
"I made the decision yesterday, along with the medical team, that if he couldn't get on the bases and run the bases effectively, this would be the best solution for him; to slow down, get out of the fast lane and [stop] trying to come back before he was 100 percent healthy and get ahead of it. We want to make sure that we don't miss him for a month at a time."
Injury updates
• Steven Souza Jr. (strained right pectoral) completed his second day as DH on Wednesday for Class A Advanced Visalia, going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. It followed Tuesday's 2-for-5 game where he recorded a double and an RBI.
"He's 10 at-bats into his rehab process as a DH," Lovullo said. "He's been throwing and continuing that process."
• Randall Delgado (strained left oblique) is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday with Triple-A Reno. He's gone 2-1 with a 3.55 ERA (5 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings pitched) in 11 rehab games.
